Simon Rösner is Germany’s leading squash player and has made good progress on the PSA World Tour since turning professional in 2004.
The German star had to wait until 2009 to secure his first PSA World Tour title courtesy of his victory at the Garavan’s West of Ireland event over American Gilly Lane. In October 2012, Rösner won the Santiago Squash Open, his first PSA International 25 event win, after defeating Cameron Pilley 3-1 in the final.
2013 saw a strong showing in the North American Open. He participated in a closely-fought ‘battle of the giants’ against Omar Mosaad in the second round, beating the Egyptian in a five game thriller. He then went on to face eventual winner Ramy Ashour in the final. He followed that up with a silver medal at the World Games in Cali and won the Alwatan and Asnan International against Borja Golan in December 2013.
November 2014 brought Rösner his eighth PSA World Tour title at the Edmonton Open. He defeated Egyptian Tarek Momen in a mammoth five-game final to earn his biggest ever PSA World Tour title weeks after breaking into the top ten in the world for the first time.
The German was exceedingly close to picking up another title in early 2015 but was unlucky to lose at the final hurdle of both the Canary Wharf Classic and the Grasshopper Cup where he lost to Nick Matthew and Gregory Gaultier respectively. Those defeats seemed to knock the German as he made a number of early exits during the start of the 2015/16 season that saw him fall to a shock elimination against Ali Farag in November’s World Championship.
Rösner qualified for the 2015/16 PSA Dubai World Series Finals, held in May 2016, but went out at the group stage, however he had returned to the world’s top 10 by the end of the year. He reached the semi-final of the UCS Swedish Open in 2017 but lost out against France's Gregory Gaultier. Rösner was also knocked out in the quarter-finals to then-World No.1 Karim Abdel Gawad at the El Gouna International Open.
Rösner started the 2017/18 season with two semi finals appearances. He made the last four at both the Macau Open and the Qatar Classic, before going on to win the Tournament of Champions at the start of 2018. The German then reached the semi finals of the season-opener in China to get his 2018-19 campaign underway, before then reaching the final of both the U.S. Open and the Qatar Classic.
Rösner reached the semi-finals of the Hong Kong Open in his next event, before also reaching the last four at the World Championships in Chicago, and then the DPD Open in Eindhoven. He finished the season with a quarter final showing at the British Open.
The ‘Tree-Chopper’ started his 2019-2020 campaign in Nantes at the Open de France, where he reached the quarter-finals, something he also achieved at the FS Investments U.S. Open Squash Championships, J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions and Windy City Open presented by the Walter Family.
Rösner’s best performance of the season came at the PSA Men’s World Championships, where he reached the semi-finals. He also led his country at the WSF Men’s World Team Squash Championships in Washington, D.C., as Germany came home in 6th spot after reaching the quarter-finals for only the second time in their history, following a 5th place finish in Mulhouse in 2013.
The German No.1 made it through to the last eight at the Manchester Open as the sport returned, losing out to eventual finalist Karim Abdel Gawad in four games.
